ABC Kitchen - Just another reason to worship Jean-Georges. I have been lucky to eat at this establishment twice (considering it takes 4 week advance reservations) - once for lunch and once for dinner. Located on the highly attractive ground floor of ABC Carpet & Home, the notion of this place is "haute organic and Hamptons sustainable."
ABC Kitchen pulls off a hat trick. The food is great and not terribly expensive and its just, well... pretty.
For a farm-to-table restaurant, they do a very good job of keeping the menu diverse. The menu includes items such as crudités with an anchovy dip to fiddlehead ferns roasted in the wood oven and a complete embracing to the food world’s fascination with ...ramps. (I can't wait for them to be back in season)!
My favorite dishes are the large slices of toast slathered in rich, creamy chicken-liver mousse and the pizza - featuring a variety of mushrooms, Parmesan, oregano and a soft, runny egg. (I ordered it both times I was here). And if you're into dessert, the best is a sundae made of salted caramel-peanut icecream and candied popcorn.
Next Up...Nougatine at Jean-Georges. Possibly the least critically acclaimed and most overlooked restaurant in NYC and yet this past weekend Evan, his parents and myself ate our way through the menu and never looked back.
From the same kitchen as the famed Jean-Georges, Nougatine provides a more approachable menu. You can still experience euphoria, ecstasy, mastery - all the thrills Mr. JG has to offer but at a price that is easier to swallow and service that remains top notch. (picture concurrent placement of each of our dishes from the servers).
Aside from all of the restaurants glory there was one item on the menu that blew my mind - A dessert none the less. I was attracted by the name - I had never seen something like this on a menu before. Being the "living on the edge" type, we decided to order.
It was a Concord Grape Vacherin with toasted sesame icecream, green tea and shiso. Interesting huh? I wasn't surprised when I found out it was one of Johnny Iuzzini creations. This dessert is a veritable explosion of flavors. Whipped meringue-esque cream sits atop a fruit puree/sorbet, accompanied by a sprinkle of what tastes like traditional Hallavah. From the contrast of textures-- soft, sticky, crisp, crunchy, toothsome, firm-- to the range of vibrant flavors, this dessert is a showstopper.
